Jamie Dean Wright, 45, was killed while working inside a pit at the construction site of a future Exxon service station at 3310 Coteau Road, near the intersection of U.S. 90, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Wendell Raborn said.
Wright, a fuel tank installation company employee for Pump Tech, was involved in accident a few minutes before 3 p.m. when the walls of the pit he was working in collapsed. Wright’s body was later extricated by rescue workers.

“I’m not sure yet if he died of asphyxiation or other body trauma,” Falterman said this morning.
“That will be proven by an autopsy. We pronounced him dead at 3:38 p.m. I have ordered an autopsy for the cause of death. That will be done today or tomorrow.”
Pump Tech had no comment when The Daily Iberian reached them Thursday and this morning.
Fire departments from Iberia Parish Fire District No. 1, Coteau and Rayville responded to the accident.
Raborn said there were no other injuries reported, and was unsure if heavy thunderstorms that took place around the time of the accident were a contributing factor.
“We’re documenting it as a work-site accident,” Raborn said.
“If any other agencies get involved with the investigation we’ll be happy to cooperate with them.”
