Authorities said the man who pointed a gun at a clerk and demanded money and surveillance tapes from Brother’s Self Serve gas station Wednesday morning left the store with a “dummy” tape.

In a press release issued Wednesday afternoon, the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said it determined the surveillance tape taken by the robber was a dummy tape and the actual recording stayed in possession of the gas station.

Deputies responded to Brother’s Self Serve gas station, 1626 S. Hopkins St., at 8:09 a.m. Wednesday after a man wearing a mask walked into the business with a gun, demanding money and the working surveillance tape.

A patron in the store at the time of the robbery said the robber pointed his gun at him, ordering him to get on the floor.

“Then (he) did what he had to do from there,” the patron, who did not want to be identified, said.

IPSO Public Information Officer Wendell Raborn said an undetermined amount of money was taken and that no one was injured during the robbery. The suspect was last seen walking west on Admiral Doyle Drive wearing a brown shirt and dark-colored shorts, deputies said.

A witness described the suspect as being 5-feet, 8-inches tall and about 150 pounds.

Detectives investigating the case said a person of interest is being sought at this time.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 369-3714.

In Wednesday’s The Daily Iberian, the address of the incident was incorrectly listed as 600 W. Admiral Doyle Drive.

" A "dummy tape" implies there is an ACTUAL tape hidden and secure somewhere else. Didn't you read the article??? "

" Why on earth would the sheriffs department put this kind of information out they it was a dummy tape. Its not like we don't have enough crimes committed in this town. Thanks for letting any would be criminals know this information incase they are thinking of robbing some place else. Next time sheriffs department think of the peoples live you may put in danger. "

" Why would they let everyone know its a dummy tape, so someone else can go in their and rob them again and demand the real one and maybe think it is the wrong one and hurt the employee. I work in a store and I would not want them to rob me and demand that I give them the correct tape, they may try to hurt me. Thanks for making that public. How smart. "

" Patron did not want to be identified? Daily Iberian needs to get it together. Yall already printed his name, Charles Williams:(quote)

“He pointed the gun at me and made me get on the floor, then did what he had to do from there,” Williams said. "

" This story is disgusting, and ignorant. If he has a dummy tape, the real one should give a definate description of the suspect. I'm really confused in this situation, and also the string of burglaries throughout New Iberia. What is this city coming too. Instead of talking and bickering about race, we should be discussing safety for all. I'm a black male, and I work, socialize, and chill with all races. It doesn't cross my mind that they may be racist in any way, and if thats the case so be it. They supress it when I'm present andI'msatisfied. "

" Iagree with JJ. What's with the media being so frightened to give a complete description of the robber? "Political Correctness" pure and simple. They endanger all of us with their half baked descriptions. I'll be sure to be on the lookout for any suspicious brown shirts or dark colored shirts regardless of who or what is wearing them. Thanks alot! "

" i agree wondering, isn't it amazing that they actually spill the beans on "how" crimes are committed, and then wonder why so many people get away with things. now people know they have dummy tapes out there, more reason for them to just injure the employees than take the evidence they think they can destroy! "

" Now that was smart to let the public know it was a dummy tape. Don't you think the guy who robbed the store might go back and try to hurt the person who gave him the wrong tape? "
