New Iberia had no such luck, stranding eight runners and twice failing to score after loading the bases with fewer than two outs, resulting in a 14-4, season-ending loss for the Cajuns in the semifinals of the American Legion Sub-regional Tournament at Acadian Park.
“The most important thing is we didn’t get the hits when we needed them,” said Cajuns coach Shane Faucheaux.

“I’m proud of our team,” said Faucheaux. “They didn’t quit. We just didn’t win the game.”
The reason the Cajuns didn’t win the game was simple. Abbeville pounded out 21 hits off four New Iberia pitchers, including a pair of home runs and a triple by leadoff hitter Trey Broussard.
Broussard finished 5-for-6 with six RBIs and scored four times, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning to give the 29ers the lead for good at 3-1. His three-run shot in the fifth, which cleared the left-field fence about 15 feet to the right of his previous homer, made it an 8-1 game, and his RBI single in the sixth made it 10-2. Broussard also tripled and scored in the bottom of the eighth.
Tony Frederick went 3-for-6 with three runs scored for Abbeville. Jacob Frederick was 4-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run; Jeremy Bertrand went 3-for-5 with two RBIs; and Trey Derouen went 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs.
Coming on the heels of a 15-3 loss to the Delhomme Drillers on Saturday, it was a disappointing end to a district-championship season.
New Iberia starter Coby Landry suffered the loss, allowing three runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 12⁄3 innings. Anderson surrendered five runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 22⁄3 innings. Damien Babineaux allowed four runs on seven hits in 12⁄3 innings, and Lee Hebert gave up two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
“Our pitching was pretty deep,” said Faucheaux. “All the kids have done a pretty good job all year long.
“We just ran into a couple of teams that got hot at the right time. Lafayette gets 20 hits last night, and seven today (in a 10-4 loss to Sam Houston). Abbeville gets 21 today. Everything they hit dropped. But that’s just part of the game.”
Many of Abbeville’s hits did, indeed, seem to have eyes. Several little flairs sailed just over infielders’ gloves, and even the two triples somehow found their way past the outfielders.
But the main issue was New Iberia’s failure to hit with runners on base. The Cajuns loaded the bases on three consecutive one-out singles in the third inning, but hit into a fielder’s choice to third base that resulted in a force out at home, and a strikeout ended the threat.
In the very next inning, New Iberia again got three straight singles to load the bases, this time with nobody out, but again grounded to third for a force out at home, then hit two more groundouts to end the threat again.
Mouton went 2-for-4 with a homer to pace the Cajuns, Josh Perez went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs and Latiolais was 3-for- with a double and two RBIs. Stefan Lopez went 2-for-4, Brandon Anderson was 1-for-4 with a run and Drew Callahan and Pat Neustrom also had hits.
Tony Frederick got the win for Abbeville, giving up 13 hits and four runs with three strikeouts in eight innings.
Faucheaux said he is proud of what the Cajuns accomplished this season. New Iberia finished with a 22-9-1 record.
“Our goal at the beginning of the year was to win district, and we did,” he said. “We shared the title with Abbeville. We wanted to reach the postseason, and we did. I really thought we had a chance to win this (tournament). The first two games we played pretty well, but the last two we just ran into a couple of teams that were hot.”
Abbeville plays Sam Houston at 4 p.m. today, with the winner taking on the Delhomme Drillers at 7 p.m. Delhomme has already earned a spot in next month’s American Legion State Tournament in Gonzales. The Abbeville-Sam Houston winner also will advance to state.
