Wild comebacks and fantastic finishes highlighted the first day of the American Legion Sub-regional Tournament at Acadian Park Thursday.

Heymann rallied in its last at-bat with five runs to beat Eunice, Sam Houston and Abbeville combined to score 21 runs in the ninth inning of their game and only Delhomme and Crowley had any sense of normalcy in their contest.

The tournament continues today with two elimination games and two winner’s bracket contests.

At 9:30 a.m., Eunice, an 8-7 loser to Heymann, played Opelousas, an 11-2 loser to New Iberia, in one elimination game and at 12:30 p.m., Sam Houston, a 17-12 loser to Abbeville, played Crowley, a 6-1 loser to Delhomme, in the second elimination game.

In the winner’s bracket, New Iberia plays Delhomme at 4:30 p.m. and in the last game of the night, Abbeville battles Heymann at 7:30 p.m.

Delhomme 6, Crowley 1

Josh Ezell had a hit and scored two runs, Greg Fontenot had a hit and scored a run and Corey Broussard and Colten Daigle each doubled as Delhomme beat Crowley.

Daniel Cloteaux went all nine innings for the win, allowing one run on four hits for the win.

Jake Trahan took the loss for Crowley, allowing four runs on four hits in seven innings.

Ryan Leonards, Frem Reggie and Matt Savoie all had hits for Crowley.

Heymann 8, Eunice 7

The Heymann Chiefs, down 7-3 in the ninth inning, scored five runs in its last at-bat to stun Eunice in the first round Thursday.

Eunice, behind ace Austin Young, built a 7-3 lead as Stuart Turner doubled and scored a run and Mitchell Fusilier singled and scored a run.

Tyler Fontenot and Casey Charlie each had two hits for the Oilers.

Ridge Ridgedell had two hits, Brad Landry doubled and Caton Hyde, Zack Leblanc, Matt Leblanc and Garrett Krammer each scored a run for the Chiefs.

Abbeville 17, Sam Houston 12

In the wildest game of the day, Sam Houston led 7-1 going into the ninth inning before Abbeville erupted for 16 ninth-inning runs in taking the win Thursday.

The Post 29ers sent 23 batters to the plate in the inning and everyone in the lineup scored at least one run in the inning.

Sam Houston, not to be outdone, scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth in a valiant rally but fell short.

For Abbeville, Trey Broussard had three hits and scored three runs, Randy Frederick doubled and homered and scored three runs, Jeremy Bertrand had a double and scored two runs and Trey Derouen had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs in the win.

Blake Felts had two hits and scored three runs for Sam Houston.

Garret Logan had a double and scored three runs, Phillip Menou had two hits, including a double, and scored a run, and Ethan Logan homered.
