Jail search results in charges

A four-hour lockdown and search of the Iberia Parish Jail Thursday night resulted in the recovery and seizure of illegal narcotics, narcotics paraphernalia, contraband and homemade weapons. Five inmates are facing charges, a press from the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

The inmates facing charges are Kwaymar Michael, Jerry Chessire, David Johnson, Tristan Bernard and Derek Breeze.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Wendell Raborn said Michael and Chessire will be charged with possession of illegal narcotics. Johnson will be charged with possession of illegal narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bernard and Breeze will be charged with introduction of contraband into a correctional institution.

He declined to specify on the specifics of the narcotics charges. He said specifics would come out in court and when the inmates are charged.

Raborn said the inmates will most likely be charged Monday and are currently in their cells. He said if they are found guilty they will most likely have time added to their sentences.

Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal and Warden Frank Ellis led the search, which Ackal ordered. Angola State Penitentiary Deputy Warden Kenny Norris brought the state Department of Corrections shakedown team, comprised of officers from Angola, Hunt and Dixon penitentiaries and narcotics detection dogs, to assist.

About 40 officers total assisted in the raid.

Ackal was unavailable for comment this morning. A spokesperson at the jail said they were unable to comment.

Raborn, who was at the scene Thursday night, said the raid was planned by Ackal, Ellis and state officials and unannounced to anyone else beforehand.

“They got full co-operation from the state shakedown team,” Raborn said. “They were happy to come assist. They did a fantastic job — it was a sight to see.”

He said the officers searched the jail pod by pod. Inmates were removed from the pods, which house 25 to 30 people, one at a time. After that, the pod was hand searched with the dogs assisting.

Raborn said he had seen a few shake downs before, but this one was extremely large-scale and efficient. He said the chance something was missed exists, but that “if something got by these guys last night, I would be surprised.”

Raborn said the homemade weapons are what are known as “shanks” — a homemade knife or ice pick. It is included in the charge of “contraband.”

“There’s always the rumor or hint of things coming in and out” of the jail, Raborn said, adding Ackal wanted to make sure there was nothing there and to make sure the inmates knew these types of things would not be tolerated. “They’re not supposed to have these items. I’m sure there will be raids in the future.”

He said he did not know when the last raid was conducted.

" JMO what does it matter to you if people pat Sheriff Ackal on the back for a job well done? And why does it bother you so much he's getting air time? And why does it bother you the Sheriff looks like a real man in front of the camera? Not every man or woman can wear makeup and hair spray like the ex-sheriff did and maybe still does. Sheriff Ackal appears for all practical purposes to be a real man. You know not a primper in front of the mirror like you know who. He's the real-deal. "

How do you think a searched inmate coming in can get by with drugs? And you think family members are bringing it to them? HELLOoo family members visit behind a brick and glass wall and only speak through phones! Somebody needs to wake up. "

    " Way to go Sheriff!!
To you who think this is a publicity "stunt", I do hope it is!!
Now the inmates families and friends will think twice before bringing in any contraband. THAT is the reason to publicize the raid! Let the convicts, et al, know, ZERO TOLERANCE!
As has been stated before, sheriff. Watch the deputies, and DO reward them for a job well done! It is after all, the Deputies that will "make" the sheriff. Godspeed Sheriff, Best of luck to you and ALL of your deputies!! "

He is a big bad sheriff now, ya'll same people will hate him come next election. With all this TV time he racking up, maybe he should call up pretty boy Sid's hairdresser. He looks like a big pile of hot sloppy mess. Oh and to the person that thinks there is cable TV for the inmates.. get a clue! "

They are there to serve sentences for crimes, not watch cable TV. Make them cut grass & pick up trash on state highways. Make them NOT want to come back. WAY TO GO ACKAL!!!!! "

Want to know the reason...We were short handed all of the time! I applaud Sheriff Ackal for a job well done! Bringing in the right people for the job was something that should have been done a long time ago! "

The administration just didn't feel the need to gloat about each and every thing that is a basic part of the job! But, I'm glad they are actually doing their job, maybe next time they can do it all by thereselves! "

" Finding contraband in a jail is NOT UNIQUE TO IBERIA PARISH JAIL! "

someone who knows wrote on Jul 18, 2008 3:15 PM:

" The truth be told, there were shakedowns at the jail on a regular basis! It was also common practice for charges to be filed on contraband items that were located! The problem we faced was the DA's Office often ti,es dismissed the case to obtain a plea in another case rather than pursue the contraband charge. I might also add that when drugs were found either in random drug screens or otherwise, the inmate was also charged criminally and disiplinary action was taken to include good time being taken away. "

Just what I hoped for. Congratulations Mr. Ellis. You were a feared probation officed because you meant business now you can start working your magic before they are passed to the probation/parole office. "
