IYBA teams set for district tournaments

The Iberia Youth Baseball Association will host district Pinto and Mustang baseball tournaments beginning July 10 in Loreauville, and is sending team to the Bronco Boys District I and II Tournament in Eunice beginning July 4.

The Coteau 11- and 12-year-old team, which features players from Coteau, Lydia and Rynella, plays its first game in the District I and II Bronco Tournament at 6 p.m. Friday, July 4, against Mamou.

“We have a pretty solid little team,” said team business manager Neal Trahan. “We think we can compete with (the teams there). We have a pretty well-rounded team.”

Coaches Wayne Jeanminette and Derek Evans, who coached Coteau Bronco league teams during the regular season, kept an eye out for players from other IYBA squads they could use in the postseason, said Jeanminette. That allowed them to put together a well-rounded team with good pitchers, hitters and defensive players.

“The bad thing about (the tournament) is it’s July 4th weekend, so we didn’t have as diverse a team as we could have,” said Trahan. “We have a few families that are taking vacation then.”

At 5 p.m. Saturday, the winner of the Coteau-Mamou game faces the winner of Friday’s late game featuring the Eunice Americans and Arnaudville.

The losers of those two games play in an elimination game at 3 p.m. Saturday. SLYAA St. Landry and Eunice National play the tournament opener at 6 p.m. Thursday, with Iota facing Crowley National at 8 p.m. Thursday.

The tournament continues through Monday with the champion and runner-up advancing to the Bronco Section Tournament starting July 11 in Crowley.

Team members include Myles Jeanminette, Stephen Speer, Hale Trahan, Dusty Meyers, Grant Falgout, Hunter Deranger, Gabe Fuselier, Jeffrey Oubre, Bryce Leslie, Austin Gaspard, Shaye Thibodeaux and Brennan Jackson.

The District II Pinto Tournament for players ages 7-8 is a five-team, double-elimination tournament, said tournament co-director Henry Chastant, who is in charge of the Loreauville Park and also is a Pony director.

The tournament champion and runner-up will advance to the Pinto Section Tournament in Picayune, Miss., starting July 17.

Delcambre, Coteau/Rynella, St. Landry, South St. Landry and Loreauville are competing in the tournament.

The first game features Delcambre against Coteau/ Rynella at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 11, followed by SLYAA (St. Landry) against South St. Landry at 7:30 p.m. The losers of the first two games meeting at 11 a.m. July 12 in an elimination game, and Loreauville faces the St. Landry-South St. Landry winner at 12:30 p.m., with the loser there facing the winner of the 11 a.m. game in another elimination game at 2 p.m.

The Delcambre-Coteau/Rynella winner faces the Loreauville game winner at 3:30 p.m. for the championship. The loser of the championship game plays in the loser’s bracket final against the other surviving team, with the winner finishing as district runner-up.

The Mustang (age 9-10) District IV Tournament starts Thursday, July 10, and features eight teams in a double-elimination format.

Delcambre plays the Rynella/Lydia Tigers at 6 p.m. Thursday in the tournament opener, followed by South St. Landry against the Rynella/Lydia Crushers at 8 p.m.

On Friday, July 11, Arnaudville faces Loreauville at 3 p.m. and Erath plays Coteau at 6 p.m.

Saturday games are loser’s bracket elimination games at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., with winner’s bracket games at 1 and 5 p.m. The tournament continues with games at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday and continues with two games Monday, at 6 and 8 p.m.

If the winner’s bracket finalist loses the 8 p.m. game, the two finalists meet again Tuesday at 6 p.m.
