JEANERETTE— Funeral services will be held for Charley Berard, 61, at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Jerusaleum Baptist Church in Jeanerettte with the Rev. Anderson Clay Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Hope Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 7 p.m. at Alex Lovett Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will continue Saturday from 8 a.m. until time of service at the church.

A native of Jeanerette and a resident of New Iberia, Mr. Berard died Saturday June 21, 2008 at LTAC of Acadiana following a lengthy and courageous battle.

Charley was born Aug. 2, 1946 to the late Naville and Ethel Moses Berard in Iberia Parish.

He was baptized at an early age and attended, faithfully, Nazareth Baptist Church in Little Woods.

He attended elementary and high school in Jeanerette. He graduated from F.M. Boley in 1964, for which he was the class president. He also graduated from Tyler Barber College in 1965 in Tyler, Texas and Oscar Rose Jr. College in 1978 and Midwest City, Okla., receiving an Associate Degree in Art.

He had been a licensed barber for over 40 years and owner of Berard’s Barber Shop in Jeanerette. He was a member of the Louisiana State Association of Barbers, Cosmetologists and Allied Industries Local No. 496. He was also King Ezana in 2005 representing the Jeanerette Mardi Gras Association.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1965, served in twenty fifth Infantry Division, did a tour of duty in Vietnam (1966-1967) and was honorably discharged in 1968.

God brought Charley to it and he saw him through it.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories his devoted wife of 35 years, Mary Helen James Berard; mother, Ethel M. Berard; sisters, Marguerite B. Sereal of Jeanerette and Annie B. (Ernest) Rideaux of Alexandria; brother, Richard (Yvette) Berard of Houston; mother-in-law, Hazel A. Moss of New Iberia; brother-in-law, Ronald (Madeline) Moss of New Iberia and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Naville Berard; brother, Irving Berard, maternal grandparents, Willie Sr. and Effie Moses; paternal grandparents, Charlie and Amelia Berard; father-in-law, Leonard Moss and brothers-in-law, Wilson James III and Adam Sereal.

Pallbearers will be Richard Berard, Allen Antoine Sr., Cleveland Jones, Ulysses Rideaux, Charles Gilbeau and Cary Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ernest Rideaux, Reggie Moss, Wilson James III, Jason Rideaux, Kynan Sherman, Harold Cook, Ronald Moss, Russell Chew, Frank Smith, Alfred Archon, Ron Berard, Reginald Berard, Spencer Broussard, Leo Barabin, Chris Sereal, Cedric Sereal, Juma Johnson and Ray Johnson.

Alex-Lovett Funeral Services Inc. of Jeanerette is in charge of the arrangements.
