Thank You City, School Board and Shane Romero

I would like to thank the Mayor and the city council and the Iberia Parish School Board for not to raising our property taxes.  Both the city and the school board recognize that with the costs of everything rising, many people can't afford to pay more taxes.  Last night, the school board said that the people of Iberia Parish have been good to them and they realize that they must return the favor.  Thank goodness they have both made the right decision for the people of this parish.

I would also like to thank Shane Romero who has been a voice for everyone in the parish so we don't have to pay more property taxes.  He spoke at the city council meeting why the city shouldn't raise our property taxes and he spoke last night on our behalf for the school board not to raise our taxes.  Both the city and the school board listened.  I hope he will continue to speak on our behalf at the parish council meeting and with the sheriff so that they don't raise our property taxes.

Thanks city, school board and Shane for doing the right thing!

If someone wants to voice that if we have to live within our means and so should government then I fully support that person. By the way, Shane's not advocating doing nothing, he's speaking up so you and I don't have to pay more taxes. "

" I did read the IEDA legislation. The original version can be read on the legislature's website. Page 14 says it "authorizes the board to levy annual ad valorem taxes up to 5 mills and, subject to parish council and voter approval, such a tax up to 10 mills". Translation - the 5 voting members from private industry (with no accountability to taxpayers) on the executive committee of IDF can TAX the people of Iberia Parish without council/voter approval up to 5 mills.

It's black and white and pretty easy to understand, isn't it! "

" What don't you understand? Just because The Daily Iberian (allegedly) reports something doesn't make it the gospel. Check the archives. Shane did not violate the charter. In fact, you find that the charter MAY have been violated, not that it WAS violated. Of course, an "oral contract" isn't the best thing when dealing with a public entity but my lawyer and I have an oral contract on his billable hour and rate.

    CONT'D... "

" Brian-Shane received parish funds in violation of the parish charter, based on an "oral contract". Only an idiot would negotiate an "oral contract" with a governmental body. As far as I know, if the assessor values your house at an amount certain people THINK is too low, that doesn't constitute a violation of any governmental charter. King-If you would have taken the time to read the IEDA legislation like I did, any tax would have to have been approved by the Parish Council. Last time I checked, they were elected by the people to represent them. "

    " Brian,
You know what, you are right. I haven't seen anything by Taylor yet but, we have a few years to wait and see how much he does. Want to make a bet it won't be anything that will help the little man? Nahhh, you won't make a dumb bet like that and I don't blame you. He is one of the individuals that takes the money from parish supporters for the Sugarcane Festival and spends it in another parish for their ritsy parties. By invitation only! Geezz! "

" Here we go again! Shane was never found guilty of ANY wrong doing. Taylor , on the other hand , saved his rear(how ironic) by having Huval re-acess his house after the undervalue issue was brought up.I haven't seen anything proposed by Barras to benifit our area. "

" Funny thing is you don't have a problem with Taylor protecting your interest as a taxpayer when, as president of Iberia Bank, he can't protect his own employer. By the way, what ever happened to the 2 Iberia Bank employees who stole over 1/2 millon dollars under Taylor's watch? Maybe Taylor can use that money for the Iberia Economic Development Authority. Oh wait, he wants to let his rich friends TAX us without a vote to do that. "

When Taylor is caught in an illegal contract with a disgraced government official come talk to me. Until then, I have no use for Shane's rantings. If Shane, as an attorney, can't figure out that he has entered into an illegal contract himself, why on earth should I vote for him to protect my interests as a taxpaying citizen? "

" Have you heard Taylor say anything about how he would improve infrastructure or run government without additional revenues? No. Has Taylor taken a stance on anything when running or while in the legislature? No.

I don't see why you all need to tear down Shane to make yourselves feel better about Taylor. Go look in The Daily Iberian archives and see what they had to say in their campaign. Speaking of infrastructure I do, remember that Shane was the only candidate with a plan to improve roads in our parish and state. "

" The City, Parish and School Board have been raising and receiving taxes EVERY year. You talk about the need to be able to pay for good schools, roads, etc. because of the increase costs but let me ask why are we still ranked last in every category while being amongst the most tax burdened states?

I don't mind paying taxes if it is quid pro quo. In other words, let me see some bang for my buck because as it stands we still have the worst road and eduction in the nation. "

" You hit the nail on the head. You can't run a parish or a city and improve infrastructure without more money. Cost of construction alone has gone up 30% since the hurricanes. Funny thing,I haven't heard Shane talk about how he would improve infrastructure or run government without additional revenues. I guess that is why he lost the election. You can't be a leader by just always saying no. I would have more respect for him if he actually proposed an alternative instead of continually advocating doing nothing. "

" I have nothing against Shane, just pointed out the obvious. My issue is with all you "poor me" professional victims who are running this town straight down the toilet. At some point, if we want good roads, good schools, and decent recreation, we have to pay for them. Or is all the new projects all we (you) need? "

" Now who's negative here? I was addressing the remarks made by "real deal" . That person is obviously (as are you) a Taylor stooge. As to running Taylor down , I only point out the things that stink to high heaven. Like when his house was under-valued by Huval , or , when he wanted to give his fat-cat friends the power to tax the common folk. If that's running him down , be prepared to see some epic running each time he tries to pull a fast one. Give my regards to LSU's faternaty row! "

To Brian wrote on Jun 13, 2008 1:23 PM:

" Why do you continue to try and bring Taylor down? Leave well enough alone.
I voted for Taylor, however I am not against Shane. I would never attempt to run Shane in the ground like you constantly do to Taylor. I know you want Shane to be your State Rep. but you being so negative will only hurt his chances next round of voting. Shane did a good thing here....good for him, were all thankful, however, he is not the only person who has ever done anything right. Stop your petty bs. "

" Let's see. The first response to this subject uses words like "complicity" and attacks Shane. There's absolutely no suspense about who the real deal is. Could it be Will Chapman and his Daily Disappointment disciples?

So what if he's grandstanding. I'll give him the microphone and the soapbox to stand on if it means not having to pay more property taxes. At least he has the courage to speak up and take on politicians who try to dip in my pocket. "

" Hey real deal , how long have you worked at Iberia Bank for Taylor? Shane did what he did as a concerned citizen. If more folks thought of the common people , and not their rich friends , this would be a much better place to live. Bravo Shane , and thank you. "

Grandstanding or not, I don't see anyone else taking a stand to lower our taxes. In fact, I went to both meetings and Shane was the ONLY person to speak.

He also sent a letter to the editor explaining the process before appearing to speak which urged everyone to call their council and school board members and how to deal with the assessor. Funny thing is The Daily Iberian plagerized his letter afterwards. "
