Sadly leaving my home

By: Longing for good old days

I write this with a heavy heart as I am saying goodbye to family, friends, and my beloved hometown. Ok granted I may not be exactly able to say longing for the good old days because I am only in my 30s. But New Iberia has gone to (well you know the saying....To .... in a hand basket!) I loved growing up in New Iberia but things have changed so drastically that my husband (whom also grew up here) wants to find work elsewhere and get the heck out of Dodge.

All of our family lives here but our town has not moved forward as most people hope that their towns will do. The crime rate is up, the laws are not being enforced and there are countless other things wrong with this city. There are abandoned houses that are a complete eye sore that need to be either renovated or torn down. There is nothing in this town for kids to do and so therefore they hang out in parking lots and end up getting into trouble. I know so many have commented on other places they have gone to and wished our town could be like that. I also know the flack they got for commenting about these things such as" well if you don't like it then leave" the problem is that most of us do not want to leave but we are being forced out due to the crime and the lack of anything to keep us around.

Sure there is the Shadows on the Teche but even that just last week I heard a lady in stage that had come on the tour bus say that this was a total waste of her time and money. This is sad when we have a place that can be toured and the tourists are making comments like that. New Iberia will soon be nothing more than a ghost town if the residents do not demand that things change. I know that our town can do this and I want to be able to say I am from New Iberia and be PROUD of that. Yet while on vacation last year in Colorado we met a couple there and got to talking and they asked where we were from and when I told her she said "Oh I am sorry to hear that; your state has the lowest academic programs and lowest education levels in the entire United States." The sad part is that I could NOT disagree with her. Imagine my shame at having to admit that she was right yet that is also what got my husband and me to thinking about relocating to another state.

I am sad about having to leave my hometown, but we want our children to have the best education possible and that is just not something that is available to us here in South Louisiana; New Iberia especially. The worst part is that I am sure that almost if not everyone on the City Council will agree with me but no one will step up and try and do something about it. Over the years I have read some great ideas that were offered up for a change in this town and I have even offered a few myself, yet none of them have been acted on. A mall, a water park, sprucing up our local City park, the only thing that was opened was the skating park and even that is not used as much as everyone thought it would be, (what younger kid has money to go every weekend). Sure there is the Sugar Cane Festival but even that has turned into a crime waiting to happen and no respect for anyone, so much so that everyone in our family refused to attend the Festival last year. It is sad when you do have very few festivals and events to attend and can not even attend them because the officials refuse to maintain order, oh yes they claim they do but it is very obvious that there is no order at all at any of these events. I get so tired of hearing "Shop Iberia First" when there is almost nothing to shop unless you have quite a bit of money you can afford to let go of ( most all of the shops here are extremely over priced.)

In conclusion I continue to have hope that New Iberia will catch up with the rest of the world and try and move forward in their growth of things in this town for the old and the young and that this town succeeds in the much needed success it must find to thrive and grow. I am sad to say that I doubt that will happen and even more sad to say that should it happen I will not be here to see it but that is only because I have been waiting for it for the last 10 years and have seen nothing that resembles growth so my family and I have decided it is time to move on to a town that cares about itself and its children which they keep in mind when trying to rejuvenate and grow into a more successful town.  New Iberia will always be my home in my heart.

However, the grass is not much greener elsewhere. I've lived in Oympia Washington; New Haven Connecticut; Tucson, Arizona; Lubbock, Texas; Washington, DC; Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, PA; Phoenix, Arizona.

Each place has had entrenched politicians; struggling schools; employment issue; workplace performance issues; filth; dirt; crime; drugs; academic attrition; high insurance rates; racism; homophobia, etc.

Every place has also had positive change agents; successful students; strong employees; beautiful parks; safe neighborhoods; diversity; civility, etc.

We must fix "it" ourselves. Welcome to America in the 21st century. "

Now, I have 2 kids and cannot see my self in New Iberia too much longer. The city has let trash roll in and they are not cleaning it up! Visitors from Europe are astounded at our commitment to preservation in a nation obsessed with blind progress. You say that "a mall" or "water park" (God forbid) would make our town attractive. I cannot imagine tarnishing the unique charm of New Iberia with such vulgar commercialization. You may find more "successful" places to live, but I would rather live in New Iberia than in a soulless city designed with all the superficial, plastic perfection of Disneyworld. "

Now I work for a large company and when they are looking for new people the first place they go is the Universities in Louisiana. Now almost 16 hours away I work with many people from Louisiana. It's sad even to see how the community center in the park has gone down tremendously. "
