BALDWIN — A 61-year-old woman was arrested Friday on charges of selling prescription painkillers, police said Monday.

Darlene A. Dupre, of Lafayette, was charged with distribution of Schedule IV narcotics. She was booked into the St. Mary Parish Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Baldwin Police Chief Gerald Minor said he saw what appeared to be a drug deal between two vehicles in the parking lot of Dollar General on Main Street.

He said officers found about 10 Oxycontin pills after stopping one of the vehicles on Louisiana 83.

The driver, Reed Thibodeaux, 29, of Rayne, admitted buying the pills from Dupre.

Officers located Dupre about two hours later at Cypress Bayou Casino.

Minor said she had “numerous” Oxycontin and Lortab pills in her possession.

“It’s not too often we catch a granny dealing drugs,” he said.

" Well this is good one! I've been reading lately about the alarming and extraordinary numbers of elderly being admitted to detox centers because of addiction to prescription drugs. A fact that of itself is abhorent. All while the pharmaceutical companies like Purdue, the medical community, chronic pain patients, and the FDA (all) claim that prescription painkillers cause "dependance", not addiction. But this story adds a new dimension of shameful consequences to the problems and is the epitome of what all this greed and stupidity has created. This is really disgusting.
