A local organization is hosting an event to honor World War II veterans on the eve of D-day’s 64th anniversary.

The Iberia Cultural Resources Association is hosting a “Salute to our World War II Veterans” for Iberia Parish veterans and their family members June 5 at the Sliman Theatre.

Jason Theriot, author of “To Honor Our Veterans: An Oral History of World War II Veterans from the Bayou Country,” will attend the event and will tell some local veterans’ stories from his books.

There will also be music from the 1940s, refreshments and a display of WWII memorabilia, said Cathy Indest, president of the association. She said all the names of the attending veterans will be called out.

“You will experience music, memories and recognition for your sacrifice and dedication,” says the invitation.

Vice President Claire Mire said at least 100 invitations were sent last week.

It will be “a nostalgic look back,” Mire said.

Veterans and families are invited to attend, and veterans are requested to wear any available memorabilia.

Any Iberia Parish veterans who did not receive an invitation should contact Mire at 364-8298 by May 23 to reserve space for themselves and attending family members.

The event will last from 5:30 until 7 p.m.

Transportation is available upon request. Wheelchair accessibility is at the rear of the Sliman.
