Iberia Schools salute top students

Iberia Parish School Board members recognized a number of students who excelled in and out of the classroom during the 2007-08 academic school year.

The School Board saluted Sugarland Elementary fifth-grade student Alyssa Rochon, Anderson Middle School eighth-grade student Adrian Oudomrath and Westgate High School senior Lacey Blanchard with plaques for being selected Iberia Parish school system’s Students of the Year.

The School Board also honored the Delcambre High School softball team for winning the Class A state championship. Superintendent Dale Henderson presented the softball team with a $500 check to help cover the team’s expenses during their playoff run.

“We are extremely proud of all of these students,” Hender-son said. “I am very impressed with all of these students. I want all of these students to keep up the good work.”

The School Board then acknowledged students from various schools who participated in the Louisiana State Fitness meet.

During its brief meeting the School Board also received information from staff members about its 2006-07 District Performance Scores.

School Board members were told the school system’s DPS score rose 0.3 points to 84.4 and the school system is now ranked 28th out of 69 school districts in the state.

Suzanne Whitaker, supervisor of testing and evaluation, told board members that  the school district is improving, but still has some work to do.

Additional information Whitaker shared with board members were 13 of the parishes’ schools showed academic growth and seven earned monetary rewards. Ten schools displayed no academic growth, and five schools received the academic label school in decline.

The school system also received a label of exceptional for its teacher certification index of 97.5 and was ranked 18th in the state.

The School Board also  purchased a Lightspeed Total Traffic Control subscription for its computer network. When installed, the appliance runs on the school system computer server to control content filtering, provide antiviruses and SPAM management.

The total cost of the subscription is $29,100 a year.
