FRANKLIN — In honor of National Minority Health Month, the Teche Action Clinic is sponsoring a health fair Saturday.

The health fair is scheduled to be held at the Broussard-Harris Recreation Center on Fourth Street. Participants can come in between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to take advantage of the services.

As a part of the fair, the clinic will offer a number of free health screenings, including blood pressure, body mass index, dental, blood sugar and HIV testing.

“This year we are adding something new to the health fair and that will be a Diabetes Awareness Walk,” said Alfreida Edwards, executive assistant at Teche Action Clinic. “We are also going to have several local business and organizations on hand to assist us if anyone has questions about Medicaid, Social Security and the Early Steps Program.”

Edwards said the fair promotes healthy lifestyles, disease prevention and bringing a resolution to health discrepancies between minorities and non-minorities.

In addition, the clinic will also offer resources on health programs such as WIC/Nutrition, as well as valuable information on the HIV virus, AIDS, tobacco and cancer.

James Willis, 29, of Frank-lin, said he attended the event last year and it was beneficial.

“They tell what you should know and not what you would like to hear about your body,” Willis said. “I am looking forward to participating in the event on Saturday and bringing some of my friends to receive the free testing.”
