The Iberia Parish School Board have created three temporary assistant principal posts for interim principals who won’t have schools after next month.

The School Board approved the new posts at its meeting Wednesday.

Avery Island Elementary School interim principal Jon Gonsoulin will move to Daspit Road Elemen-tary, Peebles Elementary interim principal Chantel Helms moves to Caneview Elementary and Bank Avenue Elementary interim principal Maxine Jones will assume assistant principal duties at Pesson Elementary.

Superintendent Dale Henderson told School Board members the reassignment plan brings necessary help to the three elementary schools with high enrollments. As the school system’s building program progresss, some schools will close. He said now is the time to deal with what to do with the interim principals.

“All of these professionals have given many years to our system and have served at the administrative level for some time now,” Henderson said.

Before voting on the recommendation, Henderson told School Board members the assistant principal posts were temporary. When the interim principals move into other jobs within the school system, the new assistant principal slots will no longer exist.

“This is a way in which we can honor the work, dedication and service these professionals have offered to our system,” Henderson said.

Gonsoulin, Helms and Jones will retain their principal salaries next school year.

After that they will be paid as assistant principals with their salaries based in part on years of experience and number of students at their schools.

All three interim principals were at the School Board meeting Wednesday and thanked Henderson and School Board members for their new jobs.

Jones said it was a pleasure to follow many of her students to Pesson Elementary.

“I look forward to working with Mrs. Jefferson, principal at Pesson Elementary, and doing a good job at Pesson next school year,” Jones said.

Gonsoulin said she really appreciated what Henderson and the School Board did in creating these assistant principal positions.

“I see this as another step along the way because there are great things going on at Daspit Elementary,” she said.

Helms is again looking forward to working with Dorothy Small, principal at Grand Marais Elementary.

“I worked under her for a number of years at Grand Marais Elementary as a teacher and am looking forward to working with her again.”
