Area port on the Web

The Port of Delcambre is looking to keep itself as a “working waterfront,” with a brand new Web site.

Wendell Verret, lawyer for the Port of Delcambre, handles most of the port’s administrative functions. Verret, the Delcambre Steering Committee, which is made up of Delcambre residents, and port commission members developed  the Web site, which recently went online at www.portofdelcambre.com.

The site allows visitors to learn more about the port’s assets, redevelopment proposals, the economic impact of ports, fisheries, legislative developments and other areas.

In addition, the site deals with the recovery of the shrimp industry in the wake of Hurricane Rita and better access for recreational fishing.

Verret said that public access to the waterfront is central to maintaining its viability.

“We want to enhance what is already there and bring in more retail interests,” Verret said. “At the same time, we want to still incorporate the fishing industry in the waterfront.”

Jim Wiggins, a Delcambre resident who works for Hi-Tech Automotive in New Iberia, serves on the steering committee.

He said the concept for the Web site began to develop after Hurricane Rita, and agrees development of the waterfront is a key goal of the site.

“We’re looking for some more recreational development, such as a restaurant or maybe a boardwalk or a marina type development,” Wiggins said.
