Concerned about the potential for flooding? If so, don’t miss the upcoming open house from 2 to 8 p.m. April 10, at the Cyr Gates Community Center in New Iberia.

The open house will afford residents the opportunity to view the latest Preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps. According to a press release received by The Daily Iberian, “updated versions of maps highlighting flood-risk zones are now in digital format providing greater detail and making it easier for citizens to view the information and determine their current flood risk in order to make more informed decisions about protecting their property.”

The press release also said the maps were developed as part of a nationwide map modernization effort spearheaded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency which administers the National Flood Insurance Program.

There will be specialists available at the open house to address any concerns and answer questions.

“I would highly recommend that the citizens take advantage of this opportunity to view the changes proposed to the Flood Insurance Rate Maps so they can determine if it will have an effect on their property,” said Jimmy Landry, floodplain administrator.

The open house will provide access to flood rate maps for the following areas: Jeanerette, Loreauville, New Iberia and the unincorporated areas of Iberia Parish.

The town of Delcambre will have to travel to Abbeville to review flood maps for its area. The open house for Vermilion Parish will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. April 9 at the AA Comeaux Recreation Center, 300 AA Comeaux Drive in Abbeville.

The preliminary flood maps were developed as part of the nationwide map modernization effort spearheaded by FEMA, which administers the National Flood Insurance Program.
