No more $100s

A few bad apples — or notes to be exact — have prompted a local fast food chain to stop accepting $100 bills.

Signs were posted on every register at the East Main Street McDonald’s in New Iberia this week, announcing the restaurant was no longer accepting anything larger than a $20 bill.

Larry Miller, owner of McDonald’s, said he instituted the policy at all eight of his family’s restaurants after three fake bills were passed at locations in Vermilion Parish in the past two weeks.

“At places like ours, we’re working on a lot of orders real fast,” he said.

“You don’t always assume you’re getting a bad $100 until it’s too late.”

Miller said he is not sure how long the policy will last, but he did say he is ordering more permanent-looking signs.

A spokesman for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said they have received no complaints of counterfeit bills in the parish recently.

" I want to address the "legal tender" argument. A business has the right to accept whatever form of payment they want. Think about it. If they HAD to accept hundred dollar bills, would this article even be here? It wouldn't, because they wouldn't be able to make that rule in the first place. The link below should put this part of the argument to rest:

" In cashing checks at area banks in my lifetime I've been handed $100 bills and have to actually ask that the teller give me smaller denominations. I understand the frustration of receiving $100 bills and trying to use them to purchase things that don't nearly add up to $100...but this is legal tender. I don't believe denying someone a hamburger because they don't have small change is the answer. The problem seems to be with people using counterfeit bills. Addressing the real issue is more important than punishing those people who DO have $100 bills. "

" First of all,who is stupid enough to print fake $100 bills and try to pass them around local parishes or even McDonald's? It's South Louisiana not New York. Wow, that's dumb. Hmmm, maybe $20s would be easier to pass. Just a thought.
As far as XXX's comments about them having to accept a legal bill of tender, I'm not sure conterfeit bills qualify as they are...you know...fake. Consumers can be told by the owner what they will or will not accept. You don't like, get your own business and make your own rules.

" I experienced this at a McDonalds in Winnie Texas 25 years ago. Well, the solution is easy; I do not stop at that McDonalds nor any other that discriminates against the size of my currency when my grand children wish a happy meal.
I would spend my money at other fast food eateries. We do have choices just as the McDonalds has made a choice.
What's going to occur when other smaller bills are counterfeit? "

" I am self employed and sell to stores, so most of the cash I receive is $100 dollar bills from the stores, so it is rare that I do not have a hundred on me, besides who wants to carry all those small bills. So when I go to someplace like Mcdondal's to feed my family, I will most likey pay for it with a large bill, and because it is Legal Tender they can not refuse it. "

" I applaud this move by McDonald's, not only because of counterfeiting, but also because of speed of service. It creates a delay when people pay with a hundred dollar bill, because they often have to go get change from another part of the store while everyone else in line waits.

Could someone please offer insight as to why people carry hundred dollar bills? Is there some legitimate reason, or are they trying to show off? Believe me, I'm not impressed when I have to wait because some clown is paying for their Filet-o-Fish with a hundred. "

It's their responsibility to ensure the bill is legit. Consumers should not be told where they can use money or not. "
