CHARENTON — A man walked out of Cypress Bayou Casino with a backpack full of cash this morning, and it was not winnings from the slot machines or blackjack tables.

A witness, who declined to provide his name, said a masked man walked into the casino carrying a handgun around 5 a.m. He jumped through an opening in the cashier’s desk, filled up a backpack with money and ran out the door.

“He just caught everybody totally off guard,” the witness said. “There was hardly anybody playing.”

The witness said the man threw a stack of money across the blackjack tables as he was leaving, but said nothing.

“It kind of shows how good the security is,” he said. “Nobody ever touched him.”

Patrick Darden, executive director of the Chitimacha Gaming Division, confirmed the robbery took place, but said he had little other information. He referred questions to the Chitimacha Police Department.

“At the present time, we’re just trying to gather whatever information we can,” he said.

Chitmacha Police Chief Blaise Smith did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman John Sonnier said the sheriff’s office assisted in the robbery investigation, but referred all questions to the Chitimacha Police Department.

" Yes, I think they did a wonderful job of keeping the people inside the casino safe by not provoking the robber. What were they going to do? Point their finger at the robber and say drop your weapon?? "

" If you think Cypress robs people don't watch that channel. No one at any casino drags anyone at gun or knife point to go there. So if you think you're getting robbed don't go. DUH!!!

" These security officers did exactly as they were trained to do. Remember that these officers are unarmed and are trained to "report and identify" not to try and stop an robber. If they try to stop an armed robber the risks of an officer or bystander getting harmed are too great. It is better to let the robber get out of the casino where they can be apprehented by more trained police officers. "

" To the eye witness you should have went up and touch him. The security offices did just what they had to. Any thing besides that would have gotten them killed and maybe some of the other people in there as well. "

" To boulee who made the comment about cbc robbing people. What an ignorant comment to make. People who go to cbc or any other casino do it for entertainment. Cbc does not hold a gun and demand people to give up their money. "

" Volunteering your money to play games of chance at a casino where the house has the advantage is not robbery. Some people would call that stupidity. At least no one got hurt. "

" As far as the comment about the guy never being touched by the "Eye Witness" would it have been better for the security guards to tackle the guy and put their life as well as other customer's lives in danger? "Hello, the guy had a gun." And this comment is to "Boulee" the last time I checked people went to the casino willingly, the casino nor their employees "ROB" anyone. When you walk into a casino it is your choice to gamble your money noone forces you or puts a gun to your head. "
