FOR THE LOVE OF BEADS

Ask most people at New Iberia’s Krewe of Andalusia Mardi Gras Parade what they liked most about it and they would have told you — “the beads.” And, there were plenty of throws for everyone to catch Monday night.

People on colorful Mardi Gras floats moved along Main Street, blasting out music and throwing plenty of traditional Fat Tuesday collectibles. They threw cups, doubloons and plenty of assorted beads.

The parade, originally scheduled Friday night, was rescheduled because of the rainy weather. Many people said it was a good decision.

“It’s so pleasant tonight, and it would have been a shame to cancel the parade and not have it at all,” said Pam Landry of New Iberia. Landry’s husband, Joey, agreed that a Monday night parade was the way to go.

“The turnout is good,” he said. “I didn’t expect it to be like this.”

The Landrys were enjoying the parade with their son, 8-year-old Matthew, and with their neighbors Sissy and Preston Gary, who were there with their children.

“I like to catch beads and candy,” said 11-year-old Miranda Gary, Sissy and Preston ’s daughter.

A little bit farther down Main Street, Jeannie and Carl Viator of New Iberia were watching the parade with their grandsons and they were really getting into the Mardi Gras spirit by wearing traditional hats. When asked why he decided to wear a jester’s hat, 11-year-old Dillon Williams, the Viators’ grandson, said this is his favorite time of year.

“Because of the color, and you get to get cool stuff from people,” he said.

In addition to floats, there were cars, marching bands from Teche Area schools and dance teams. People along the parade route even joined in and danced as tunes were played during the parade.

" I ATTENDED THE MARDI GRAS PARADE LAST NIGHT, IT WAS VERY NICE, HOWEVER, I WAS READING THE DAILY ADVERTISOR THIS MORNING ON THE WEB, AND SAW THAT THEY HAD A PHOTO GALLERY OF LAST NIGHT'S PARADE, WITH 69 PICTURES, MY GRANDAUGHTER WAS MARCHING IN THE DANCE SCHOOL, AND SHE WAS IN ONE OF THE PHOTOS, THEY WERE VERY NICE. I WAS JUST WONDERING WHY THE DAILY IBERIAN CANNOT HAVE SUCH A SECTION.

    THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. "
