New Iberia has one of the most beautiful Main Streets in America, but there is ugliness here, in the form of panhandlers. I live near, and work on Main Street. Seldom does a week go by when I am not approached by someone looking for “money to get to work in Houma, Morgan City or Golden Meadow” or to “clean or move something for 20 dollars”. This has been happening for at least three years. I have been approached by the same person several times with the same story. This also has spread to New Iberia department stores and pharmacies. I have also witnessed them around ATMs and in the front of stores giving their same “old story” to tourists and elderly people who just want to get through their daily errands without confrontation. These “parasites” prey on our fear and sympathy. One of my friends was at a downtown ATM and he placed himself between her and her car with her child in it. She was scared and gave him the $20 she had just taken out of her account.
Almost everyone I speak to has either been approached or knows someone who has been approached by these people. There are about five “regulars”. They come into our office asking for money and I see them doing the same thing across the street. I also exercise regularly on Main Street when it is dark outside. I have even been approached for money then. (Who has money when they are jogging?) Something needs to be done about this before someone gets hurt.
We are about to have a new sheriff in town and I think this growing problem needs to be addressed. I see bicycle deputies sometimes on Main Street. I think this is a good idea. However, it needs to be a regular thing. It would be nice if they could visit with the downtown business owners every now and then to ask if there are any concerns or issues that need to be addressed. We would be happy to offer the deputies coffee, water, conversation, etc. This would also increase communication with the Sheriff”s Office and the public. This may also work in other areas of the city as well.
I also ask that business owners and citizens refrain from giving them money. If we stop giving them money, they will eventually stop coming around. I genuinely care for the less fortunate and I give a lot to local charities. They should have the resources to help these people if they really need it. I shouldn’t have to fear for my life or the life of my children when we are going for an evening stroll downtown. I want to walk through City Park and not have my finger on the trigger of my mace can.

Tell your relatives and everyone you know.
If someone needs food, they can go to St. Francis Diner. If they need a place to stay, there are multiple shelters here.
They do not need our help. They only need directions!!!!!!!!!!!! "

Ever try just telling them "NO."?
Deal with it. The poor and lazy have just as much right be there as you do. "
