The last two months have been busy for members of the Jeanerette Volunteer Fire Department.

Since October, the JVFD has responded to eight major fires, with two resulting in fatalities.

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s office is still investigating the most recent fire at Unique Creations Flowers.

Jeanerette Fire Chief Mitch Dubois said firefighters were called  just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19 to Unique Creations located at 310 Louisiana Street.

Dubois said the fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes,  but the business suffered smoke and heat damage throughout.

Jessica Salcup, shop owner, and employees and customers escaped without injury.

The Iberia Parish Fire District No. 1, BOM, Lydia, Grand Marais, Coteau and Four Corners departments also responded to the fire.

The final report from the  state fire marshal’s office had not yet been released, but Dubois said there are indications it could be from an electrical cause.

Dubois said Jeanerette residents  are expressing some concern because of the number of fires in the same vicinities in such a short period of time.

“I have business owners asking me if they should get security at night,” he said.

Four of the fires were within a two to three block area from Pellerin to Louisiana Street. Another fire, linked to  a water heater, had occurred just a few days earlier on Louisiana Street.

“There are a lot of stories going around in the last couple of days that the fires have been set intentionally, but people should not worry. There is not an arsonist going around town,” said Dubois.

“All of the fires have been pinpointed to either an electrical cause or carelessness. The state fire marshal was called in to investigate each one.”

Dubois said residents need to take extra precaution not to overload electrical outlets and  be cautious when using space heaters and electrical appliances.

“We have a lot of buildings in Jeanerette with older electrical wiring,” he said.

“This isn’t the first time that we have had this many fires in a year. It’s just that the fires have been hitting all at once.”

" as a former member of the JVFD,and currently a distict chief of a fire dept in another parish, i think it is just stupid to sit here and bicker about this. Firefighters are a brotherhood and we should support each other instead of knocking each other down. Those of you who think you can do a better job, step up and do it instead of just writing about it. after all, actions speak louder than words. Keep up the good work Chief Dubois. Need any help, just call. Your friend in houma. "

" Well I kno for a fact that it was a waste of money hiring a full time chief. For one the part time paid was doing an excellent job. They did the same job Mitch is doing for less pay. So I think they should have kept the part tiime paid. Look in all the year of ML in the department how many people died 1 and that was a 30 year spand. Now once ML was out with his experience trainig you had 2 die with in a month apart. But Mitch is doing a good job No. "

" Well if you ask me Jeanerette spends a lot of money in various areas that is just completely a waste. For example, the police department they only have certain people targeted and they forget about the rest. I had property damage, but because I wasn't the person committing the crime they could care less. As a result NOTHING was done and the person is still on the loose. "

" ML, say what you please because you are a want to be and never will be! Chief M.D. is doing an excellent job, keeping bullies like you out of the FD. Oh that is right you are important because you do background checks; for at least four times the amount of $'s the Chief is working 24/7 (365) for and he has a family to support, you we know what you support too bad the LSP does not know you pleasures. " Apparently "qualifications" aren't required in Jeanerette for investigations or to be fire chief, because he doesn't have any. They never will as long as no one cares about a quality fire department. The only thing Jeanerette city government cares about is if someone, ANYONE, just simply shows up to the fire with a fire truck.
At least Fire District #1 is finally getting back on track thanks to Chief Sonnier. The job of the Fire Chief at a fire is to be outside, walking around, observing. If he's actively fighting the fire he can't see the big picture. "

" What does qualifications have to do with an Investigation. If that is the case why does the Fire Chief in the parish call the state for every little fire. I know because he does not know what he is doing and it shows. he always gets to the fires long after the first arriving engine and walks around like a scared puppy. "

" In times like this, I think maybe we should have hired the guy with a Masters Degree in Public Administration, a degree in Fire Science, and 25years of experience as a paid firefighter, fire captain, and chief fire officer to be the fire chief in Jeanerette. Remind me again, exactly what qualifies Mitch to be fire chief? Wasn't it the MINIMUM qualifications necessary. I guess if you hire the guy with the bare minimum qualifications, you get just that...the bare minimum. Congrats Jeanerette, $18,000/year well spent. "
