“By nature, most self-taught artists are born storytellers,” Houston said.

“The paintings of Mary Anne Pecot de Boisblanc, like those of her fellow Louisiana self-taught painter Clementine Hunter, are memory paintings in their intent to evoke a distinct moment of a culture in transition.”
