ST. MARTINVILLE - Since Sept. 26, the Acadian Memorial has been the host of a traveling exhibit, Farming the Wetlands of Old Acadie: 17th Century Reclamation to Present-Day Restoration.

Currently officials with the Acadian Memorial are inviting Teche Area residents who have not seen the exhibit to come out before it closes Friday.

Compiled by graduate students from Louisiana State University, the exhibit describes the historical significance of Acadian farmers, the science behind their farming methods and the ecology of the Nova Scotian landscape.

The exhibit also includes coastal restoration projects currently functioning in former Acadian territory.

The students researched the historical use of the salt marshes for agriculture by early Acadians. They also studied how the land use has shifted over the past 300 years following the deportation of the Acadians and how present-day restoration techniques are being applied to these marshes.

In September 2006, the group traveled through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick experiencing the Acadian culture while studying the ecology of the salt marshes surrounding the Bay of Fundy. This exhibit offers a French and English version of the story of these marshes from the late 1600s to present.

If anyone has any questions or would like to attend the exhibit, call The Acadian Memorial at (337) 394-2258.
