Westgate beat New Iberia, Erath edged Catholic High, Hanson held off Delcambre and Abbeville edged St. Martinville as Teche Area high school football teams were involved in district matchups with longtime rivals Friday night.

Westgate used its speed advantage and strong special teams play to beat New Iberia 41-7 in the District 4-5A opener for the two city public high schools. Erath scored two defensive touchdowns to beat Catholic High 20-14 in a District 7-3A game, while Hanson built a big lead and held on for a 28-20 win over Delcambre in a District 8-A contest. Abbeville handed St. Martinville its third overtime loss, 24-18, in a District 5-4A matchup.

In other Teche Area games, it was St. Helena Central 20-8 over Franklin in a non-district matchup; West St. Mary 20-0 over Berwick in District 6-3A action; and Donaldsonville 55-0 over Jeanerette, and Livonia 23-8 over Loreauville in a pair of District 7-2A games.

WESTGATE 41, NEW IBERIA 7

Westgate (3-3, 1-0) used its speed and special teams to great advantage against New Iberia in winning the District 4-5A opener for both teams at Lloyd G. Porter Memorial Stadium.

D.J. Sophus scored on a 70-yard run on the Tigers' second play from scrimmage and returned a later kickoff 72 yards to set up another touchdown. Westgate's special teams also contributed a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown from Courtney Sparrow, a blocked punt by David Youman to set up a short scoring drive and a 50-yard punting average on three kicks by Siegan Vergenal to force NISH (3-3, 0-1) to have to make long drives all night.

"We let them get all the momentum they needed in the kicking game," said NISH coach Rick Hutson.

"I think field position was a real big part of it," said WHS coach Brian Fine.

"The kickoff return was big to get us in the end zone right before the half. D.J. made a great run to get us back in it right after they scored."

Backup quarterback Diontae Spencer, subbing for injured Deon Anthony, threw for 76 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a TD, while Korey Nowak scored on a quarterback keeper following a short NISH punt in the fourth period.

New Iberia quarterback Ryan Clement went 14-for-29 for 170 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter. NISH was limited to 39 yards rushing after finishing in negative yards on the ground for the first half.

ERATH 20, CATHOLIC HIGH 14

ERATH - In the District 6-3A opener for the two local teams, Erath got a 57-yard interception return from Kyle Broussard for a touchdown in the second quarter and a 35-yard fumble return from Chris Tyson to seal the win in the fourth quarter.

"You can't give up two defensive touchdowns like we did and win the game," said CHS coach Craig Brodie.

Catholic High's Ryan St. Julien, who was sick most of the week, returned three kickoffs for 124 yards, rushed for 41 yards and two touchdowns in leading a CHS comeback from a 14-7 halftime deficit.

And underthrown fourth-down pass by CHS inside the Erath 25 with less than a minute remaining sealed the Bobcats' win.

"I just have no thoughts right now," said an ecstatic Erath coach Jacob Byler after the game. "This afternoon I challenged our seniors, in particular, to step up and do the job. Sooner or later, basically what I told them, was you gotta grow up and do the job, if you want to win football games."

HANSON 28, DELCAMBRE 20

FRANKLIN - Ladd Hidalgo ran for three touchdowns and returned an intercepion 26 yards for another touchdown as Hanson built a 22-point fourth quarter lead, then held off a late Delcambre rally to win the District 8-A opener for both teams.

Hidalgo's 129-yard rushing effort included touchdown runs of 60, two and one yards to help the Tigers (2-4, 1-0) snap a four-game losing streak and move into a tied for the district lead with Vermilion Catholic.

HMS quarterback Christian Steiner was just as effective, running for 87 yards and completing 10 of 14 passes for 159 yards.

Delcambre (2-4, 0-1) struggled early but rallied with two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 28-20 and had the ball at the Hanson 41-yard line in the final minute but Chris Esponge's pass was picked off by Brandon Stansbury to seal the win for the Tigers.

ABBEVILLE 24, ST. MARTINVILLE 18, OT

ST. MARTINVILLE - St. Martinville's Tigers did just about everything they could to bring a winless start to the season to a halt.

Abbeville's Wildcats, 3-3 overall, just did it one better with a 10-yard touchdown run on their second play in overtime, thus handing the Tigers their third overtime loss this year Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

It was a crushing defeat for first-year St. Martinville head coach Marc Broussard and the Tigers, many of whom wept on the field long after the District 5-4A decision went to the Wildcats. The Tigers rallied from an 18-0 halftime deficit to tie the score 18-18 late in the fourth quarter and send the game into OT.

"We're oh-and-six. We could easily be 3-3. Three overtime losses," Broussard said. "I told them after the game there's no reason to hang their heads. They came out and played football in the second half like they know how."

The Tigers, 0-3 in 5-4A, had 32 yards in total offense after two quarters. Led by running back Trae Williams, who scored two touchdowns and rushed for 180 yards on 30 carries, St. Martinville finished with 198 yards on the ground. Williams tallied on a 54-yard run on his team's first play of the second half and later scored on a seven-yard scamper to knot the score at 18.

Sandwiched between those scores was a 13-yard pass from ironman quarterback/defensive back/punter/placekicker Gordy Bourque to wideout Jonathan Hills.

But St. Martinville, after losing the overtime toss, failed to score on four plays from the 10. Bourque last-gasp pass was intercepted. Minutes later, the Wildcats' Henderson scored the game-winner.

"I take my hat off to St. Martinville. They played a good game. It just came down to the end. We made one more play than they did," AHS head coach Robert Toomer said about Jhordi Henderson's 10-yard sprint around left end to win the game.
