Homecoming games, road wins for area football teams

Published/Last Modified on Saturday, September 29, 2007 4:25 AM CDT

Three Teche Area teams celebrated homecoming on Friday, but only one team's fans were able to celebrate a win as the other two suffered setbacks at home.

Westgate, Franklin and West St. Mary each held homecoming ceremonies for their students, alumni and fans Friday, but only Franklin came away with a win, beating nearby rival Jeanerette 34-6. Westgate turned the ball over five times in suffering a 28-14 loss to its former district rival Sulphur, while West St. Mary was on the short end of a 63-13 score at the hands of a strong Donaldsonville squad.

In other games involving area teams Friday, Church Point beat Erath 20-12, New Iberia picked up a big 27-3 win at Comeaux, Catholic High suffered a narrow 21-17 loss at St. Louis, St. Martinville fell to in-parish and district rival Breaux Bridge 27-7, and Hanson fell to Class 3A in-parish rival Berwick 23-22 on a failed 2-point conversion attempt.

On Thursday, Delcambre pounded North Central 40-14 and Loreauville lost to former district rival Vermilion Catholic 27-7.

Following the game summaries below is a list of prep football scores gathered from around the state by The Associated Press.

SULPHUR 28, WESTGATE 14

NEW IBERIA - Four interceptions, three coming in the second half and one returned 85 yards for a touchdown, shot down Westgate's chances to beat fifth-ranked Sulphur Friday at Lloyd G. Porter Memorial Stadium.

Sulphur scored three first-half touchdowns, utilizing an option attack that at first befuddled the Tigers, to break off big chunks of real estate for a 21-7 halftime lead.

Westgate scored on passes of 49 yards to Lellande Davis and 48 yards to Justin Williams, but quarterback Deon Anthony was hobbled by an injury suffered the week before and could not contribute to the running game. Anthony is the second-leading rusher on the team but did not attempt a run on Friday.

A third-quarter interception off a tipped pass was returned for a Sulphur touchdown after Westgate had advanced the ball to the Tors' 19-yard line put the game out of reach.

WHS fell to 2-3, while Sulphur improved to 4-1.

FRANKLIN 34, JEANERETTE 6

FRANKLIN - Harold Defils recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, Gerian Lightfoot had an interception and a fumble recoverey and Franklin defense smothered Jeanerette offense as the Hornets rolled to its non-district win Friday agains FSH coach Zeb Simon's former team.

Franklin held Jeanerette to minus-17 (-17) yards rushing in the game and only 109 total yards of offense while forcing a fumble and intercepting two passes.

Ryan Sorrell had two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, Chase Boykins threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns and Lightfoot added a touchdown reception on offense as FSH improved to 3-2 overall.

Jeanerette fell to 0-5 on the year.

DONALDSONVILLE 63, WEST ST. MARY 13

BALDWIN - West St. Mary's Wolfpack ran into Donaldsonville's defending Class 2A 200-meter relay state championship foursome on the football field Friday night.

Or, more appropriately, the relay team ran past the Wolfpack to pace the Tigers to a 63-13 romp over West St. Mary, which saw its homecoming game spoiled by speed. There was the senior quarterback with two first names, Roy Sam, with his running mates Champlain Babin, Bryant Dunn and Terrance Jackson.

Now you see 'em, now you don't. That was the story of the night defensively for West St. Mary, which skidded to 1-4 with its second straight lopsided loss.

Sam ran for two touchdowns and threw for another while calling most of the plays himself. Dunn had a field day while rushing for 203 of his team's 407 yards on the ground and scoring two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. Babin scored on a 43-yard pass from Sam and on a 68-yard return of an intercepted JuanKeith Shearron pass in the first quarter as the visitors went up 22-0. Jackson got into the scoring act on a 6-yard run in the third quarter.

Donaldsonville never had to punt while West St. Mary's Carlos Alvarez, a freshman, punted seven times for a 34.0-yard average.

The Wolfpack, held to less than 100 yards rushing by the swarming Tigers, got touchdown runs of 5 and 62 yards from Shearron in the second quarter.

CHURCH POINT 20, ERATH 12

ERATH - The Bobcats looked sharp early, taking a 6-0 lead on a game-opening drive that took only two plays and a minute and five seconds, but Erath managed only 171 total yards on the night in dropping a non-district decision.

Church Point tailback Von Duplechain ran for 125 yards on 23 carries to lead the Bears, while three players - Duplechain, Bruce Citizen and Blake Boudreaux - had touchdown runs for CPHS.

Shane Hebert and Tyler Hernandez each made interceptions for Erath, which fell to 1-4.
