Former Iberia Parish President Will Langlinais was sentenced to five years probation Thursday for malfeasance in office.

District Judge John Conery sentenced Langlinais to five years at hard labor, but suspended the sentence and placed him on probation.

As a special condition of his sentence, Langlinais must serve six months home incarceration and perform 480 hours of community service.

The sentence is the result of a year-long compliance audit by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor that showed about $500,000 unsubstantiated spending under Langlinais' leadership from 2000 to 2006.

The audit showed Langlinais brokered contracts without the council's knowledge, provided free materials and labor to parish residents and received double payments for meals and expenses.

Langlinais pleaded guilty to malfeasance in office last week. He has also agreed to pay $100,000 in restitution to the Iberia Parish Council.
