FRANKLIN — As part of an agreement with Waste Management, the Franklin’s former trash collectors, Waste Management garbage cans are being picked up by its new collector, SWeeDee, to be replaced.

Mayor Raymond Harris said he has fielded calls from residents questioning what’s going on with the can collection.

“People are wondering why the Waste Management trash cans are being taken out of their yards and picked up,” Harris said.

Kuchonie Lewis, manager with SWeeDee, said the company is picking up the cans to fulfill an agreement with the company.

“We have an agreement with Waste Management, and we have a list of people who bought cans,” Lewis said.

“We were told to pick up every waste can unless they have a receipt or their name is on the list.”

Lewis said the list of people who purchased extra cans furnished by Waste Management is not long. In some cases, residents might have purchased an extra Waste Management can, and the can was still picked up by SWeeDee.

“I’ve had quite a few citizens say that they bought an extra can from Waste Management,” Harris said.

Residents who find themselves in such a predicament will have to provide proper documentation to resolve the issue.

“If they have proof that they purchased the can and bring it to us, we will not be able to give them that exact can back, but we’ll give them a Waste can back in good shape,” said Lewis.

Residents who have questions about the can pick up can call SWeeDee at 828-4937.

" Just need to set the record straight: my father, Lawrence Gauthier, wasn't a pilot in WWII - as a Marine, he was a radio operator aboard a R4D-5 (the Navy's version of the DC-3 transport), not a pilot. Since he's 5 years younger than DeBlanc, he wasn't yet in the Marine Corp in January 1943 when DeBlanc was shot down. He couldn't join until he was 17 in 1945. "
