The crowd was thin as Terry Broussard and the Zydeco Sidesteppers started their set at the Cajun Hot Sauce Festival Saturday afternoon. Only a few youngsters could be seen on the carnival rides along the midway.

As the evening progressed, however, the stands inside the SugArena began to fill and more and more of the rides had lines of children awaiting their turn.

"We're expecting a big crowd tonight for Percy Sledge," said Christine Carlton, promotional director for the seventh annual event to benefit the SugArena. "Percy always brings a huge crown, that's one reason we keep getting him back every year - that and the music."

A perennial favorite, Sledge was scheduled to perform from 10 to 11 p.m. Saturday, singing selections from his grocery list of hits.

The festival kicked off at 5 p.m. Friday and Carlton said it didn't take long for the SugArena to fill up for the Billy Currington concert that night.

"The crowd was unbelievable," she said, "the largest ever for a Hot Sauce Festival Friday."

Randy Montegut could attest to Friday night's attendance. He was working in the Bon Creole booth that night and was back on duty Saturday afternoon.

"It was a good crowd," he said, "and they stayed late. We finally shut down around 1 (a.m.)."

Outside the arena, Herman and Beth Fuselier of Opelousas were sitting under a tent watching their children on the bumper cars.

"This is the first year we come and it's really nice," Herman Fuselier said.

The couple explained that they had been at the festival most of the day because Beth did a live remote for KBON radio in Eunice. "But it's so nice of day that we decided to stay and make it a family day," she said.

The festival continues today. Gates open at 10 a.m. with Jr. Flores on stage. At noon, Geno Delafose will perform, followed by SpitKup at 2 p.m. Following a 4 p.m. performance by the Tabasco Girls, Rosie Ledet will close out this years activities.

The inaugural Jambalaya Cookoff will begin with serving at 11:30 a.m. and judging at noon. The winners will be announced at 3 p.m.

Admission today is free.

I do believe in repenting, but I also have to say that I really wish the people who "in the end" always beg for mercy on their own lives would have placed a greater value on the lives of the people who's lives they decided to disregard and treat like garbage. They were some1's daughter& son! May God bless the Bourque& Leblanc family "

" I am also a Vietnam vet, but unlike most, I did'nt even know I had P.T.S.D. It was'nt until this year that I got hit with it at work. Because of it, I lost my job of 14 years and everything that went with it. This from a company who, from the president himself, has stated its support for hiring disabled vets, particularly those with P.T.S.D. Keep the people thinking you care. And the company, Wal-Mart, who would have guessed. "
