On Friday, students from both schools showed off their projects at their respective schools attempting to secure an invite to the Iberia Parish Social Studies Fair on Feb. 24 at Iberia Middle School.
“All sixth-grade students were required to do a social studies project and this year we had approximately 100 entries. This year we had a large selection of entries in the history, geography, sociology, and economics category,” said Kim LeBlanc, sixth-grade teacher and social studies chairman at Bank Avenue Elementary.

Nastasia Brooks is a sixth-grade student at Bank Avenue Elementary School said she did her social studies project on Ida B. Wells.
“I did my project on Ida B. Wells because she was a famous poet,” Books said. “It took me about a week to do the project and I learned Ida B. Wells taught a lot of people about history during her lifetime.”
Joshua Evans, a sixth-grader also at Bank Avenue Elementary School, said he worked very hard to complete his project about the history of Jamaica.
“Doing the project was really cool because I learned a lot about Jamaica,” Evans said. “I learned about it’s history, culture, and land. My mom helped a little bit on the project and it was really fun doing it. I hope I receive an A-plus and get a chance to go to the parish fair.”
Denise Boutte, English teacher and social studies chairman at Sugarland Elementary, said approximately 250 students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grade participated in the school social studies fair.
“All of these students did their own individual projects, they choose their own category to enter their entry which consisted of political science, economics, sociology, geography, history and anthropology,” Boutte said. “Students were given informational packets about the fair and has been working since November of 2006. They were required to participate a project and will receive a grade on it.”
Boutte said judges were very impressed with this year projects.
“The students had a lot of information to share with the judges about their projects. We really appreciated all the hard work the students did especially the fourth-graders because this is their first time,” said Boutte.
Fourth-grader, Kali Vanderbilt did a project on The Hopi’s Culture.
“It took me a couple of weeks to research and do my project. My project is about the Hopi Indians and what did they do to survive,” said Vanderbilt.
