Peebles Elementary was left with approximately three to four feet of water after Hurricane Rita flooded the school. For 14 months, the Iberia Parish School Board thought it was going to get anywhere from $3.5 million to $3.7 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a new school that would merge students from Grand Marais Elementary and Peebles Elementary schools. The school board purchased property on Darnell Road for $392,000 in the spring. Recently, the school board was denied the money from FEMA for the new school.
"CNN is doing an investigative report on FEMA, and I was surprised that our situation with FEMA has become a national news story. All we want to know is how much money we will be receiving from FEMA for the relocation of Peebles Elementary. It is time to get this project moving forward, 14 months of paperwork and meetings should be ample time for FEMA to make a decision," said Superintendent Sonny Baudry.

"The camera crew took shots of pictures of us over here at Belle Place Middle School and our old school, Peebles Elementary. They asked us some general questions like how many of our students are here at Belle Place and Grand Marais, if the parents of our students are concerned that their child is being mixed with middle school students and if we thought we would be here this long. They also interviewed Crystal Arceneaux and Ellen Placide, two of our teachers, for the interview," said Helms.
The Anderson Cooper 360 show airs on CNN at 9 p.m.
