The French Immersion programs at Daspit Elementary and North Lewis Street Elementary schools are doing some interesting things this summer.

Kindergarten through third-grade students from the two schools concluded Friday a week-long summer camp where the emphasis was to learn more about pirates. The camp was conducted in French.

About 29 students from the two schools created art, made their own personalized T-shirts, hats, flags, boats and other items.

“This is a nice way to conclude the 2005-06 school year. The kids learned how to use their French skills in having fun,” said Valerie Theriez, French Immersion teacher at Daspit Elementary.

“The whole week, students from both schools learned about pirates in French. What I liked most about the camp is that students from Daspit Elementary and North Lewis Street Elementary had a chance to interact with each other.”

French Immersion students who attended the camp said they felt really good about learning more about pirates.

“This week was awesome because I painted pictures, listened to music and played on the computer while learning about pirates. Also, I learned at camp to behave better in school next school year while I am engaged in French activities,” said Claire Viator, who will be entering fourth grade in the fall at Daspit Elementary.

Thomas Davis Curry, who will be in second grade next school year at North Lewis Street Elementary, said he made a boat and learned how to sew this week at camp.

“I have proof I learned how to sew, because I have own my personalized T-shirt that I made at camp,” Curry said. “While learning about pirates, I had a lot of fun.”

Rozemine Warlet, a French Immersion teacher at North Lewis Street Elementary, said the week was successful for her and the students.

“The main focus this week was for students to learn more about French while away from school. Students participated in many different activities such as learning new technology about French, playing games in French and having the opportunity to listen to pirate stories in French,” said Warlet.

Warlet said, hopefully, students will bring what they have learned into next school year.
