ST. MARTINVILLE -- A St. Martinville man was killed Tuesday when the car he was driving veered off a highway and struck a tree.

Samuel J. Russo, 61, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a crash report from Louisiana State Police Troop I. The crash happened south of St. Martinville at 4:45 a.m.

According to the report, Russo was traveling south on Louisiana 31 when his car ran off the road to the left. He apparently overcorrected his steering, sending his car out of control and across the roadway to the right.

The car hit the tree on the driver's side door. Russo was wearing a seat belt at the time, according to the report.

Louisiana State Police Sgt. Lanny Bergeron said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The fatal crash was the 42nd of the year for Troop I and the second in recent days in the Teche Area. A New Iberia woman died Monday from injuries she suffered in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 90 near Jeanerette early Saturday.
